Island City Stage Season Casting 2022-2023

Island City Stage will be attending the Theatre League of South Florida Unified Auditions on Monday, June 13, 2022 from 5:00pm-9:00pm at Florida Children’s Theatre. Please contact the Theatre League for more information and to reserved an audition slot.

The productions and roles are as follows.

PAGEANT the musical Oct. 20-Nov. 20, 2022  Director and Choreographer -Ron Hutchins; Music Director – Michael Ursua

We seek to cast 7 men (and/or possibly one woman in drag)  for various leading roles. All performers will need to act and sing well, have strong comic timing and dance. Actors seeking roles as contestants will need to be proficient dancing in at least 2” heels. The characters are women (not drag queens)  played by men, except for one which could be cast as a woman playing the male emcee. They are over the top in almost every way but rooted in a strange personal sense of their own reality. Skills in broad comedy required. 

Roles (age ranges are 18 and over):

Miss Bible Belt, Ruth Ann Ruth:  Believes that she plus God equals a majority in any situation.  Nobody is better connected that she is.  She sees even the cheesiest part of the Glamouresse Beauty Regimen as part of His Plan.  This gives her a righteous attitude which is unshakable, but she also has the manic cheerfulness of the newly saved.  Big belter voice—strongest singer in cast.

Miss Deep South, Laurinda Summerford:  The Blonde in the show; even though others may have blonde hair, only she knows how to work it. At the same time (and she sees no contradiction in this) she is The Lady, the only one of the contestants (she believes) who knows that in order to be a winner, a lady always has to come second to her man.  She has a very narrow and ritualized sense of “femininity” which is frequently outraged by other contestants’ behavior and attitudes.  Her talent is ventriloquism, so some vocal dexterity is helpful.

Miss Great Plains, Bonnie Louise Cutlett: Utterly sincere in her belief in the values promoted by Glamouresse, though some of them seem quite exotic to her.  She is honored to represent the great heartland of this nation and to show what honest country folk can do.  Winning her region was “beyond her wildest dreams.”  In the present contest she is agape and aglow.  Not necessarily the “prettiest” contestant.

Miss Industrial Northeast, Consuela Manuela Rafaella Lopez:  Included among the regional winners mostly due to Glamouresse’s belated sense that, marketing-wise, the times they are a-changin’ and to the Northeast’s notable lack of interest in the contest.  Her talent has been culled from watching, with religious fervor, the variety show “Sabado Gigante” on Spanish television.  Actor must be able to stand on roller- or in-line skates.

Miss Texas, Kitty-Bob Ames: The Professional of the group.  With her father’s money and a shrewd selection of contests, she has never lost a competition.  Her skills may not be outstanding by themselves, but her attitude says “Winner” all the way.  She doesn’t so much want to win as she does expect to win.  Actor must tap dance to some rudimentary extent.

Miss West Coast, Karma Quinn:  Like Miss Great Plains, is sweet-natured, but Karma is a lot less focused.  She has tried to parlay her vagueness and I’ll-try-anything-once attitude into a comprehensive mystical spirituality but it hasn’t jelled.  This pageant is the most structured event of her entire life.  Karma became a regional winner when the first, second, and third place contestants were killed in a freak accident on the Universal Studios Tour.  Actor should have some dance skills.

Frankie Cavalier (Could be cast as a female in male drag)–  Our genial host, is certainly that. Frankie is a third or fourth tier celebrity who is known to the audience where the pageant is being performed, perhaps as a weekend weather reporter or spokesperson for a used car dealership. Think Martin Short meets Bert Parks meets Regis Philbin meets Rip Torn. Strong singer who moves well. 

Rotterdam by Jon Brittain. January 19- February 19, 2023 –  Director – Michael Leeds

It’s New Year’s in Rotterdam, and Alice has finally plucked up the courage to email her parents and tell them she’s gay. But before she can hit send, her girlfriend reveals that he has always identified as a man and now wants to start living as one. Now Alice must face a question she never thought she’d ask . . . does this mean she’s straight? A bittersweet comedy about gender, sexuality and being a long way from home.

Characters can be any ethnicity. 

Alice – late twenties, female, British. Living as a lesbian but not out to her family. Partnered with Fiona.

Fiona/Adrian – late twenties; begins the play living as a female and transitions to male during the course of the play. Alice’s partner.

Lelani – twenty-one, female Dutch. Co-worker of Alice who wants to get her out of shell and wants to date her

Josh – late twenties or early thirties, male. Alice’s brother and had dated Fiona.

Tracy Jones by Stephen Kaplan May 18-June 18, 2023 – Director – Andy Rogow

Characters can be any ethnicity

Tracy Jones has rented out the back “party room” of Jones Street Bar and Grill: the Place for Wings and Things, a typical chain restaurant. Tracy Jones is throwing a party to which she’s invited every woman in the world who is also named Tracy Jones. Tracy Jones has been sitting for over an hour alone, nursing her Diet Coke, waiting for any other Tracy Joneses to show up. Tracy Jones’ epic loneliness is about to be tested beyond anything she ever imagined.

Tracy Jones – female, mid-thirties to late forties. A desperate hostess longing to make connections

Jillie – female, 17-23 years old. Should read 17. Party-host-with-the-most at Jones Street Bar and Grill, the Place for Wings and Things, eager to make the customer’s experience as good as possible. Must be an excellent comedienne with astute comic timing. 

Eleanor – female, forties to sixties. A lover of books, desperate to fit in

Mackenzie – male, late thirties to late forties. Uncertain of himself.
